Sony Open 2014 Open Letter to Photographers

I posted this on the Sony Open Tennis Facebook Page.  Seriously folks this paranoiac police state we live in is beyond belief.  We'll be getting our anal cavities checked for concealing water bottles in the future.

Dear Sony Open Tennis

To the management, tournament sponsors and fans who are unaware of the policy that was enforced today at the Sony Open 2014. I have to say I was beyond disappointed and appalled at your security policy to ban all bags and all camera’s from entering the premises.
I have attended the tournament at Key Biscayne since its inaugural year in 1987. Believe me, I’ve seen it all, with and without Press credentials. I have never heard of this policy to ban an amateur photographer from entering the premises with their camera.

Do you realize that there are tennis fans from the entire world attending this event, not just locals? You realize what kind of inconvenience and hellfire you’re going to raise? I have attended the US Open, with my camera, observing all rules and laws, never had this issue. I refrained from making a scene since a good friend offered to pay for my ticket. As he entered the gate, I was stopped and turned away. I told security if I couldn't enter with my camera I’d go and leave it in my friends car. i did not have the key to his car, he crosses the gate and security would not allow my friend to step back 3 feet across the gate so my friend could give me the keys. They said “no re entry”, this was seconds after he entered with a paid ticket. What happened to the stamps, why do we have to haggle and waste time with this ridiculousness?

What is this a Professional Tennis Tournament, or a maximum security prison? Really, this is pathetic and just ruined any excitement I had because I looked forward for weeks to photograph this event that I’ve photographed for 27 years. Believe me my friends, I’m going to plaster and tweet this all over tennis and photo Blogosphere, you wanted publicity, you’re going to get it.

Let me tell you something, because whether this post is blocked or not, someone has to read and censor it. Big corporations are obviously at the top of the food chain in who gets treated with any priority or courtesy in this event. That’s been the trend these past few years, that’s why the major sponsors like Rado and Nasdaq bailed from this tournament. It’s about return of a profit on the brand. The tournament is a business entity. Profits have to be made, expenses have to be paid, policies have to be defined to keep order and safety, I totally understand that. However, somewhere along those lines of protocol. There are still fans that pay. The experience they share, is free promotion that trumps the millions you spend on advertising and customer surveys. . Now, they may not be the ones that buy and sell out the tickets in bulk, like corporate sponsors, but hopefully the tournament recognizes they shouldn’t be treated like mere amoebas in the profit food chain either!!

You know what’s sad about this whole experience? The camera I own that was banned from entry is a Sony NEX. A Sony NEX banned from entering the Sony Open Tennis Tournament. Priceless!!. Someone messed up, own up to it, apologize while you can still save face.

** Day #2 Follow Up

After the firestorm, which any competent person should have known was coming, someone in the tournament finally woke up.  You can see the image below.

Notice the top item from the list of prohibited items was whited off the list. That first item was "Backpacks"  On day #1 I brought a small backpack, it only held my camera, not much more. For others it held a bottle of water, perhaps a banana, extra batteries for cellphones  etc.

Look I understand the reasoning behind the prohibition of a backpack.  Keep that from entering the tournament, and that just means less for security to have to check right?   Read into it a bit further.  Less items coming in, yes, but also more things that Sony can ban and control.   Less photography, less water and food so you have to buy from concessions, less of the conveniences so that if you have to leave the tournament premises to get them, cuts down on the congestion because you can't re-enter once you leave the gate.

To make it seem convenient. The tournament like idiots thought they could have a makeshift locker where you pay $3 so you could leave your backpack.   That way you could enter the premises with nothing .

What they miscalculated on was that fans who pay enter fuming and pissed off.  Who's going to leave a $2000 camera lens in a bag drop to be smashed to pieces? To add insult to injury, they shake you down for $3.  Visitors from out of town or from out of the country, aren't going to complain, they traveled thousands of miles, spent a fortune to come to enjoy the tournament, they didn't just drive 15 minutes across town, but you know deep down they're perplexed and pissed off too.

By the way, my comment on the Sony Open Facebook fanpage mysteriously vanished.  Yes, friends, disappeared, like a fart in the wind. How's that for control freaks? lol

Let me tell you this, as my comment above read.  I've been attending this event for 27 years, I not only  have had a Master Card(who is a sponsor of the Tournament) for decades, I also own a Sony camera, and we all know who the top sponsor is of the Sony Open.    If you want to snub my comments, I'll direct my comments to both MasterCard and Sony.  If you won't listen to me, you'll listen to your masters.

Paraphrasing what I'll be writing:  Treat your fans better, they not only pay to watch great tennis, they use your products and services. This security shit is just so way over the top. Lastly this is only 10 days out of the whole year, if we have problems on day #1, you really got to get  your shit together.

Lastly, here is a photo I took on day #2 when I was able to get my camera in the tournament. Now you tell me, if I show the world a nice photo of the Sony Open Tennis Tournament, would they want to maybe attend the event?  How much is Sony paying me to promote their event? Nothing.  How is charging me $3 so I'm not able to share this photo with you going to help them? That concludes todays rant lol

The Sun Sets on Oak Grove

All good things have their time.  Good people, places and things. The Oak Grove Courts have to follow that rule. Sometime this year, the new Oak Grove Courts will be rebuilt to the other side of the park. The courts above will be demolished and a community center will replace it.

To me it's a shame. These courts have been here for decades. They serve a lot of people, year round, 365 days a year.  It's not just the locals that live nearby, it's people around S. Florida and even visitors to the US that use these courts.    I decided to take some photos this weekend . It's more for the historical record, so that people who'll never be able to play here could see how it was. Just good fun times, by a large group of diverse people who love and share the great game of tennis.

Zammy Forehand Setup

Here's Zammy with a decent setup on the forehand. Notice the Iphone worn on the hip and the extended pair of shorts. It's widely known that no one at the  Oak Grove courts has ever seen Zammy's knee caps, this is as mysterious as why Zammy's ancestors the Mayans disappeared  lol

Outside the courts you wait your turn. You play, you win, you stay. You lose, you sit and watch, very simple rules but it keeps order and keeps everyone happy.

After play, subject matter of conversation is open ended. Oak Grove has people of every background imaginable. These people also are diverse in talent.  Both professional and private, you have engineers, physical therapists, business owners, authors, musicians, mechanics, artists.  It's a positive reflection of how society can get along and enjoy one another's company.   It's very rare in the real world, but that's how a passion for a sport or activity can cancel all that division and squabbling that you see so much of today.

Here's Javier after 4 grueling sets of doubles, he's one of many ex-college and tournament level players that played at a very high level.

There's no question that like golf, recreational and competitive tennis has dropped off considerably in the South Florida area. For whatever reason, the game isn't played quite as much as say the 1980's, when there was an explosion of popularity in tennis. There were tennis courts and tennis tournaments everywhere. Perhaps during that time, tennis was just at its peak in its cycle. It wasn't as popular in the 1970's either because it wasn't as available. Like golf, it was a club oriented sport, much more exclusive.

Many at Oak Grove are self taught. Many have improved over the years, and play at a very respectable level. Tennis is a very difficult sport to play at an advanced level. It takes years and years of development.  The availability of these courts has made all these things possible.  There's no cost, there's other players who are always willing to play, and there are advanced players that help improving that much easier.

Weathering Windy Tennis Days

Wind Turbine
Wind Turbine (Photo credit: @PaulDCocker)
No doubt playing in the wind may be one of the most challenging aspects of the game of tennis.  The things many players often overlook is that it doesn't have to be as frustrating if you keep a few things in mind.

First, we have to remember that both sides of the court will be affected by wind.  Both players will be affected.  The wind could blow steady and consistently, or it can be intermittent.  Shots that would normally drop in could go sailing long. Shots that would normally sail long could easily drop in.  Being aware of the conditions at all times, while not letting these irregularities frustrate you is the key to becoming a better player int he wind.  We discuss a few other things you should keep in mind in this article. Tennis For Kids(Or maybe Not)

Today I had a discussion with my assistant Tennis Pro Mike.  We're going to do an article on our Tennis website about why tennis is an awesome sport for kids.  Growing up, I played many of the team sports, football, basketball and baseball.   I took up tennis a lot later than most in my mid teens.

Tennis is so unique in that you really can play it your  entire life, much like Golf.  Young people and parents don't realize how awesome that can be.  Why not take up a sport you can play longer, and that will keep you healthier and vibrant in the interim?  Makes sense right?  That's what I'll be writing about athttp://MiamiTennisTips.com

It's a shame that all kids see today on tv involves 3 major sports.  All I can say is I'm glad I started playing tennis young. Many middle aged people I know started late, and played the other sports, I know today they wish they could have started younger.

What's your opinion?  If you learned tennis in your middle aged years, do you wish you started playing as a kid, or would you still have preferred to play, baseball, football or basketball?

Legend,Legacy or the End of an Era?

Legends endure, they're often timeless  and remembered today as vividly as in the past, during their prime and peak.   Oak Grove has many living legends.  Players who in their day reached great heights, traveled many miles, and many days  of competitive success in this wonderful sport.

Our profile today is on Mike Ram, professional tennis coach, famed world traveler, part time ATP tour security guard, caterer, commissary truck driver and playboy talk show guest.   Recently there have been developments that have questioned one of Mikes most feared on-court weapons.   No, it's not the dink lob, or the often overused dink drop volley.  Surprisingly it is Mikes very  reliable forehand.   To fairly access Mikes stroke, I believe we have refer to Mikes own words, his own assessment of where he places his best shot in Oak Grove Tennis' storied history.

Mike Ram - "When I'm hitting my forehand, no forehand in Oak Grove can compare or compete with me"

I would tend to agree with this very bold statement.  There is a level of consistency and control Mike has with this stroke.  The heavy spin and simplicity of the stroke often presents problems for less consistent players at Oak Grove.  Most often it is the < 4.0  pork chips(chicharones)  that hack around the doubles courts with their funky self taught strokes.  I personally liked Mikes control with his legendary forehand.  The key word though in Mikes statement is "When"    "When" can easily be replaced with "If"    The beauty of this game of Tennis is it has more than one element during competition.  The tallest and strongest don't always win, the smartest don't always win either.

The mental aspect of this game and players who can solve the mental puzzles are the ones who leave the court with the "W"  Mental doesn't always involve smarts, it involves execution and overcoming fear of mistakes.

The talk on the courts is if Mike's Big Shot will return to prominence.  To rise above your competition, you must have that one big shot that will not break down. Whether it's Federer or Nadals forehand,Djokers  or Murrays backhand returns, you almost live and die on whether your biggest shot is tested under pressure.
Stay tuned, remember that legends and legendary shots endure.  We'll just have to see if Mike's Forehand returns as a force or fades as just a passing memory.

Please visit or flag site at   http://MiamiTennisTips.com  we have some great tips and information that you can use on and off the court.
